Personality: Wash is kind of a weird one for a space marine. He's not what you'd expect. He's not some hardened badass, rather...he's kind of soft. Firstly, he's a compassionate guy. He cares a lot about those he considers his friends and teammates. He goes out of his way to make sure that they're okay and tries to help them where he can, as evidenced when he talks to CT after a mission goes bad and it seems to him like she's blaming herself, and when he shows concern for Carolina before a mission after she's given up her AI. He's a good, kind friend and person.
He's also kind of naive and gullible, when it comes down to it. He believes until the bitter end that Project Freelancer is doing good and helping the war effort, when really, it's completely corrupt and ultimately using him and his fellow agents. He takes jokes too seriously, often not realizing that they're jokes--York makes a joke about the side-effects of AI implantation including an inverted penis, and Wash completely believes him and freaks out until being told he's just being messed with. It's an endearing quality, maybe, but not exactly the best one to have in a space marine.
Along with that note, he's also very optimistic, to the point of it being a flaw. When the Director introduces a leaderboard to rank the freelancers, he really believes that it's to encourage them to better themselves and that it's not to filter the good out from the less good. He believes that the Director is a good man, who's done everything for them, when in fact he's actually... Well. Not a great person at all. But again, Wash believes in him until the bitter end.
Also, Wash is a total dork. He has canonically eaten with his helmet on because one of the AIs told him it was possible. Obviously, he felt the need to test that out, so. Eating and drinking with his helmet on are a thing that actually happen.
Sort of along the same line, he's a bit of an awkward guy. If he says the wrong thing and realizes it, or is confronted about it, he gets flustered and stammers and stutters while trying to fix it. He also has a tendency to ask the wrong questions at the wrong time. In the middle of a battle, he uses a weapon whose ammo happens to bounce after being fired and he can't help but ask, right there, mid-battle, who would design a gun that does that. Also ties in with him being a massive dork.
Rules are an important thing to Wash. He believes that protocol must be followed to a T at all times and gets uncomfortable at the very idea of breaking them for any reason. Thus, when the Director is more than okay with two agents using live rounds in a training session which ends in another ending up severely injured, Wash is appalled, confused, and honestly can't believe it. Especially considering one of his friends was hurt in the whole thing, and the two who caused it aren't getting any form of punishment for it.
Thinking on his feet isn't something Wash is great at. In fact, he states outright that he hates to improvise, which is funny because in his line of work, where things often don't go according to plan, improvisation is very important. But no, Wash prefers things to be orderly. He likes structure and a plan to work from, and he can get frustrated when things don't work that way. He's bad at thinking quickly in the moment and when there's a lot of pressure on him. He's just bad at working under stress, and for example, when he can't get an enemy's computer system to work with him while the rest of his team is in a fight and he's supposed to be hurrying, he ends up hitting the computer in frustration. ...Which shuts the artificial gravity off, but that's another story.
As well, he has a tendency to let his fears get the better of him. He's bad at hiding when he's afraid of something, and he's not above complaining when they're about to do something that scares him. When he learns that one freelancer once got lost in space and hasn't been seen since after using a jetpack out there, he questions whether the things are really safe and, later on in a much more dire situation, puts his own life at risk for fear of ending up lost in space.
All that said though, he's not without a sense of humour. He's got a very dry, sarcastic sense of humour that can come off very deadpan at times. His timing for teasing comments is usually better than his poorly-timed questions, at the very least, and even if he's the one who tends to get teased and picked on the most of all the freelancers, it doesn't stop him from sending some of that back once in a while.
However, he's not the most confident person in the world, and sometimes the teasing aimed his way gets to him. He's not terribly confident in his abilities because, let's be real, when you're surrounded by the best of the best and you're kind of lower on the list, it's hard not to be. But when York makes a comment to North about being paired with the "second worst" fighter on the team, Wash asks him a bit meekly "you really think I'm the second worst fighter?" only to get a "no, I was being nice. You're easily the worst." in response, he gets visibly disheartened. However, he's quick with a comeback when York then gets knocked to the ground by an enemy soldier. "You were saying?" He says, maybe a little pleased for the karma in the moment.
Finally, Wash is now...rather mentally unstable. This is a new development, one that's only occurred since his AI implantation. See, all the best freelancer agents are implanted with an AI fragment--a piece of a whole AI that was tortured to create these fragments--and each piece of an AI is a piece of the original AI's personality. Wash is unlucky enough to get the fragment of the AI's memories. When implanted into his head, the AI sent a flood of memories of the original AI and of the person the AI was based on into poor Wash's mind. Naturally, this didn't go over well and left him quite crippled--actually had him screaming and trying to get the thing out. He had to be sedated and was for weeks at a time until they finally decided to just remove the AI. But the damage has already been done. The memories are still there in Wash's head, and poking or prodding at them can send him into another fit. He has moments where he's not sure what in his head belongs to him, is really his memory, and sometimes even forgets who he is--that he's not the AI whose memories he now has, or the man whose mind the AI was based off of.
Thankfully, he's relatively stable most of the time, but any wrong comment, any press of his own mind trying to remember the wrong thing, it can send him back into that instability and cause a lot of problems.
Abilities/Skills:
Hand-to-hand combat: As a highly trained "supersoldier", Wash is very talented at close quarters combat. He's not as talented as his fellow Freelancers, but he's far more talented than the average marine.
Weapons: Wash has impeccable aim with just about any sort of gun out there. He's also very good at understanding how weapons work, and picking up on how to use new ones.
Knives: Far above average combat knife skills. He's been known to catch knives out of the air that have been thrown at him, and again, he has impeccable aim when throwing them himself.
Ranged Combat: Wash is arguably much better at ranged combat than close quarters, due to being better with weapons than his bare hands. He's one of the top Freelancers in this particular area, topped only by those who are considered the snipers of the team.

So, is anyone else here used to space? I mean, not because you've been here long enough to be, more like because you come from a place where space travel is a common thing? Or is it just me?
Either way, uh, if anyone's interested, I'd be happy to give out some tips for space travel! Back home I've been on a ship in the middle of space for...quite a while, so I've picked up some tricks and stuff. Just if anyone needs help getting used to it. Especially if the artificial gravity shuts off, or something.

I also wouldn't mind having some people who're used to this sort of thing to talk to. If there are any, that is. Uhm. I guess I'm just kind of curious if space travel is the same everywhere or if there are differences between our homes in that aspect.

He didn't want to believe it, but it was hard to deny that things were different around here. Different than they used to be, at least. He hadn't noticed much change in the beginning, but the more things happened, the farther along they got, the more he finally started to clue in that things were changing. Or, perhaps not changing so much as they were just...going through a rough patch. The first real sign for him had been Connie's betrayal; that had hurt, and it had been unexpected. Maybe it shouldn't have been. Maybe he should have seen it coming, there had been signs the whole time, now that he thought about it. He could still remember her talking to him in the locker room that day, about the leaderboard, about how the Director was supposedly filtering all of them... But he'd been sure she was just being too hard on herself after a failed mission. Then there was that time when he'd caught her in the middle of making some mysterious transmission to an unknown source... He'd been a little suspicious for a while, but he'd forgotten about it when she never spoke of it, and he never caught her in the act again. Now he realized she must have been speaking with the the leader of the resistance. Maybe if he'd caught on sooner, he could have changed her mind. Possibly, he could have convinced her to stay? He'd never know now, but...he still found himself missing her, having considered her a friend, just as he did all the rest of the team.
Another big change was the AIs. He'd been so excited about them before, they had nothing but potential and seemed like they did all kinds of good, and then...well, he heard York and North talking sometimes about what it was like, to have someone else in your head. It sounded...stressful. No privacy for your thoughts, having to get used to someone else thinking up there with you... Admittedly, he was a little nervous about it now, more so than before, and it only seemed like he had more reasons to grow uneasy about it as the days went by. If the AIs couldn't sleep, neither could you, unless you pulled them for the night. But apparently, according to the others, most of them didn't seem to care for that, to be taken out of the shared mind, even for a few hours. And then there was Maine, and all the trouble he seemed to be having with his, all the headaches...
Still, things couldn't be too bad, right? They were just in tough times, but they'd pull through and everything would be fine. They'd always been fine before. They'd get past Connie's betrayal, and no doubt the Director would be more careful in selecting the AI he gave to a person, given the effects of an AI meant for one person being given to another. He was matching the AI's personality to the host, after all, selecting the person best suited to an AI's behaviour and capabilites, and Wash trusted him to make the right decisions; he was their leader, the one who started this whole program, the one who'd gotten them through everything so far, who'd trained them to be the best, and who would get them through everything that came at them in the future. He was sure of it.
Moving slowly down the hallways of the Mother of Invention, Washington's eyes, hidden behind his golden visor, stared downward, watching his feet as he found himself lost in thought. His fingers twitched, tapping absently against the armor plating on his thigh, and he chewed on the inside of his lip, brow knitting together. It was all a little confusing, and just a touch frustrating at times, but...things would get better eventually. There was no reason for them not to, after all. Everyone had rough patches, all programs like this had hard times. It was only understandable, they were at war here. Things happen, things change, and you just had to learn how to adapt. Not a big deal.
It was then, in the middle of this thought process, that a voice jerked Wash's attention back to reality. Blinking and quickly lifting his head, he found his gaze falling on a fellow agent and good friend, York, making his approach. Now snapped fully from his reverie, Wash offered a small but friendly smile that couldn't be seen beneath his helmet, and a nod in return to what he realized had been a called out greeting. A familiar face was exactly what he needed right now, just something to pull him away from unpleasant thoughts and remind him that even if things were tough, they were still fine. He and York could talk, maybe discuss recent accomplishments in training, or maybe he could ask for some tips on his lockpicking, and in doing so, he'd be reminded that he was surrounded by good people, ones who all knew what they were doing, and all knew that they were here for a reason.
When a question was prompted by York, Wash tilted his head just slightly to one side, mildly confused. Was he okay? For a moment, he wasn't sure why York would even be asking. At least, until he realized he'd been staring at the floor and no doubt dragging his feet as he walked. Even fully dressed in armor, face covered and everything, he must have appeared unmistakably distraught.
"Yeah, man. I'm fine." He assured the other man, smiling a little wider now. He'd never had a talent for hiding his emotions, so thankfully, he'd managed to mostly reassure himself. Meaning he didn't have to lie. He was feeling better now, no longer terribly worried, and feeling much more secure. Eyes darted off to the side for a moment, Wash brought a hand up to rub at the back of his neck in something that was almost like a stretch, but sort of more an awkward movement than anything else. Nodding a little absentmindedly, he shrugged, and glanced back over. "I was just thinking." His smile must have been clear and reassuring in his tone, because he could easily see York's shoulders relaxing, no longer tense with concern. That in mind, Wash took on a thoughtful look for a few seconds, then quirked a brow at the other agent, figuring he'd just thought of the best way to take his mind off needless concerns. "Want to go grab some lunch?"
